Abstract: The value of routine mammography screening for breast cancer has been the subject of heated debate for much of the last decade. Ten years ago, a baseline mammogram was recommended for women at age 35, and annual mammograms were recommended after age 40. These guidelines were based on the results of mammography trials in Europe and the United States in which a 30% reduction in breast cancer deaths was seen among women who underwent screening.
